Petroleum engineering has inscribed its position as top career options in world today. As the price of petroleum is rising day by day, the demand of a petroleum engineer has also augmented. The opportunities and salary that are available in this sector aren’t really parallel to any other sector. So to become a petroleum engineer is not a cup of tea and to find a proper internship is also a troublesome job. The scope and opportunities are restricted only in some part of the world like USA, Middle East and South Africa.
Exposure That Petroleum Engineering Intern Gets
For getting internship students need to face lots of competition and challenges. The average pay of an individual intern is about $8-$10 per hour. Only few companies are offering internship to students and among them BP, Conoco Phillips, Shell, Exxon and Chevron are renowned names. There are two round of selection process- one is technical and other behavioral round. Moreover, in order to get selection, students need to maintain a good GPA score and good knowledge of basic science and environmental studies. Though the selection processes are different for different companies and each company has their own terms and conditions. During internship interns are assigned with different field related jobs, drilling jobs, reservoir jobs and other geological jobs for which they are monitored continuously by some senior level persons who has past experience in respective fields.
Duration of an internship period is around 8-10 weeks though it’s variable in some cases. An intern is taught different set of skills which will be required for tackling complicated jobs and gain knowledge.This will give them a competitive advantage and provide them with more tools to advance into a more coveted position. The experience and knowledge that an intern gains during the internship will help him in future roles. They become more knowledgeable regarding their individual strengths and weakness for self-assessment in order to tackle adverse situations in future. If a student is able to do internship under a good brand name, then they are obviously getting better job exposure. Maintaining a good relationship with professionals or attending different job fairs & career fairs will certainly add some extra advantage for being employed. So if a student is planning to take an internship he should do a good research and should check all the facilities thoroughly before getting them enrolled for the program.
