The Lord of the Rings, The Dark Knight, and the Avengers are some of the finest trilogies out there and there are lots of trilogies that are fitting to be mentioned here because of its amazing and incredible storyline which are told through three or more movies, however, not every trilogy that you watch is totally good.
What makes a good trilogy? Well, it is very simple though, by not breaking the rules of the perfect trilogy which is ruining the storyline by adding too much or removing too much of its content. If you are planning to have a binge-watching for the entire weekend by watching a trilogy, then you should be wise in picking one because you might end up wasting your time because of the bad storyline, but anyways, here are some essential rules that make a perfect movie trilogy.
- Each film must have its own story- What makes a trilogy terrible is that incorporates the same main story in all three films or more. The usual scenario is that the first film is usually good and it is worthy for a good sequel, however the decision to make the movie to develop further is to try to tell one tale over the remaining two movies or more and this usually results in a dragged storyline and tale which is usually turned to other plots that confuse the followers. A good movie trilogy should have its own unique stories in each of its part which interconnects to the main story and the last part is the climactic finale.
- It should retain its essential ingredients- This means that the main reason why moviegoers loved the first part of the first film is because it had a brilliant way to introduce the characters, the story as well as the setting, however, the worst thing can happen is to change one of the ingredients that made it good and lose the magic of it completely and this could be very confusing on an element only introduced briefly in the film’s first part of it suddenly changes the character to its complete opposite.
- Great subtle sequels- Usually, filmmakers in Hollywood with all due respect wants to exceed the expectations of the moviegoers about the sequel that they are developing for a trilogy, however, the results of these is that it is overly packed with storylines, new characters, plot twists, and additional screen time. What makes a good sequel is that it somehow directs you to another fresh storyline that is entirely connected to the main storyline so that the moviegoers can understand more the complex nature of the film’s story and the characters involved in it.
- It should have its limits- Up to this day, the Transformers franchise of Michael Bay continues to produce another part of this already exploited sci-fi action movie which totally defeats the entire storyline that was supposed to be interesting. There are some trilogies out there that continue to push another film because of its massive success in the box office which totally defeats the purpose of the entire storyline that needed to end at the final part of the entire trilogy. The result of this is that the entire franchise is dragged.
